Homemade soft pretzels are the ultimate comfort snack, perfect for game days, movie nights, or any gathering. Their warm, golden-brown crust and chewy interior make them irresistible fresh from the oven. Dipped in mustard or cheese sauce, these delightful treats promise to transform any occasion into a celebration. With just a few simple ingredients and easy-to-follow steps, you can enjoy the aroma of freshly baked pretzels wafting through your kitchen in no time.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups warm water (110°F/43°C)
  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • ⅔ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp coarse sea salt
  • ½ cup baking soda (for boiling)
  • 2 tbsp melted butter (for brushing)

Instructions

  1. Combine warm water, sugar, and yeast in a bowl; let sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and stir until a sticky dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth. Let it rise in an oiled bowl covered with plastic wrap for one hour.
  4. Punch down the risen dough and divide it into eight pieces. Roll each piece into thick ropes and twist into pretzel shapes.
  5. Boil water with baking soda in a pot. Drop each pretzel into boiling water for 30 seconds before placing them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  6. Brush with melted butter and sprinkle coarse salt on top. Bake at 425°F (220°C) for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
