  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 ½ cups warm water (110°F/43°C)
  • ⅓ cup baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar or your choice)
  • 1 cup cooked breakfast sausage or bacon, chopped
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix warm water and yeast; let sit for 5 minutes until frothy. Gradually add flour and salt, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  2. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth. Place in an oiled bowl, cover with a towel, and let rise in a warm spot for about an hour until doubled in size.
  3. Once risen, punch down the dough and divide into eight pieces. Flatten each piece, fill with cheese and sausage or bacon, then fold and seal.
  4. Boil water in a large pot; stir in baking soda. Boil each roll for 30 seconds on each side.
  5. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Place boiled rolls on parchment-lined baking sheets; brush with egg wash. Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
  6. Serve warm with mustard or your favorite dip.
